Today, the Rolex Submariner is undoubtedly one of the most iconic and recognizable watches in the world, requiring little introduction, much like many other famous Rolex models. Originally conceived in the 1950s with a focus on evolutionary refinement rather than radical change, the Submariner has maintained its enduring appeal, and its timeless design language remains largely unchanged to this day.
Offered here today is a Rolex Submariner Ref. 116610, a reference which was introduced in the 2010s, replacing the Ref. 16610, which had been in production for nearly 2 decades. This marked a significant change in the Submariner’s lineup, featuring a newer and sturdier stainless steel case that retained the 40mm size but included slightly thicker lugs, a new Oyster bracelet design, and the ceramic ‘Cerachrom’ bezel. While the classic black Submariner model was expected, Rolex caught everyone off guard by also launching an ‘LV’ version (short for Lunette Verde, which means green bezel in French) with a green bezel and dial. Of course, collectors and enthusiasts all went wild for it, and it remains one of the most sought-after Rolex Submariner models to this day.
Nicknamed the ‘Hulk’ for obvious reasons, it was a direct successor to the previous Ref. 16610LV ‘Kermit,’ which featured only a green bezel and a black dial. As it was an anniversary piece, few expected Rolex to continue the green theme. The bold green color palette certainly gives it a visual edge over the standard black Submariner, introducing some much-needed variety to an otherwise somewhat monotonous diver lineup.
On the wrist, the Ref. 116610LV has a strong presence and a satisfying heft, which is typical for a modern Submariner. That said, I’m glad Rolex kept the 40mm case size, as anything larger would feel a bit excessive, in my opinion. Overall, the Submariner ‘Hulk’ is one of Rolex’s modern classics and will remain an enduring icon for decades to come.
