The Rolex Submariner is one of the most recognisable and popular watches in the world, period. Like most Rolexes, it requires no introduction. While there are certainly more expensive and sought-after references out there, one of the most endearing and popular vintage variants of the Submariner would have to be the 1680 ‘Red’ Submariner. Named as such because this transitional reference had the ‘Submariner’ text in vibrant red rather than the conventional white, collectors have placed a premium on this as they were produced for a short time only (from 1967 up until 1975). Heck, these days, even non-vintage guys know what a ‘Red’ Sub is!
What can I say? This particular example offered here features a lovely Mk 4 Dial with a striking red ‘Submariner’ text. It is fitted with a beautifully aged bezel with its lume pip still intact. The dial seen here is also in great condition for its age and its lume markers have developed a nice creamy patina throughout.
Looking at this example, I think there is a compelling reason why the Rolex Submariner has always been so popular, even with those who aren’t necessarily hardcore watch enthusiasts (like us). With its black aluminium bezel, its chunky bevelled oyster case and its matte black dial with large luminous plots, it is just a downright, irresistibly handsome watch. It has a timeless design and has also been regarded by many as the ultimate tool watch since its inception in the ’50s.
