Patek Philippe is perhaps the single most important name when it comes to complicated wristwatches, with perpetual calendars, chronographs and minute repeaters forming an integral part of the brand's history. One complication that is distinctly Patek, however, is the Annual Calendar, a mechanism invented and patented by the brand in 1996 that automatically accounts for months with 30 or 31 days, requiring just one manual correction each year at the end of February.
Introduced in 2021, the Ref. 4947/1A-001 is a rather unusual interpretation of this complication. Instead of the precious metal case and leather strap normally associated with Patek's complicated watches, the 4947 is executed entirely in stainless steel and paired with a beautifully integrated five-row bracelet. At 38mm in diameter and 11mm thick, the proportions are spot on, giving the watch enough presence while remaining elegant and incredibly wearable.
For me, the dial is where the 4947 really comes alive. Finished in a rich midnight blue, it features what Patek calls a 'shantung' finish, created through intersecting vertical and horizontal satin brushing that gives the surface an almost fabric-like texture. Depending on the light, the dial can shift from a deep navy to a much brighter blue, contrasting beautifully against the polished steel case and bracelet.
Despite the amount of information displayed, everything remains surprisingly balanced. The day and month are indicated through two recessed sub-dials at 9 and 3 o'clock respectively, while the moonphase sits at 6 alongside a discreet date aperture. Applied white gold numerals and leaf-shaped hands complete the look, giving what is ultimately a rather complicated watch a wonderfully clean and classical appearance.
Powering the watch is Patek Philippe's automatic Cal. 26-330 S QA LU, visible through the sapphire caseback. Made from 319 components, it features a 21-carat gold rotor, Gyromax balance and Spiromax hairspring, beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour with up to 45 hours of power reserve. More importantly, the annual calendar remains one of those genuinely useful complications, requiring adjustment only once every year rather than at the end of every short month.
What I particularly like about the 4947 is how difficult it is to categorise. It isn't quite a traditional dress watch, nor does it feel like one of Patek's conventional sports watches. The integrated bracelet, steel construction and textured blue dial make it considerably more casual than most of the brand's complicated pieces, while the classical case, moonphase and annual calendar retain everything you would expect from a proper Patek Philippe.
For me, this is exactly what makes the Ref. 4947/1A so appealing. It takes a complication that Patek itself invented and packages it in a way that feels genuinely modern and easy to wear. At 38mm, in stainless steel, with one of the more interesting blue dials in the collection and a beautifully executed five-row bracelet, it is a complicated Patek that doesn't need to feel precious, and one that can quite easily be worn every day.
