Ressence is a brand that needs no introduction. Regarded by many as the most innovative watch manufacture of this century, it is amazing to see how a brand that is less than 10 years old come this far. Centre to the philosophy of Ressence, it was always about introducing creative and forward thinking design in telling time while maintaining usability and legibility. With brands today running out of ideas and relying on reissues and changing colours of dials to introduce ‘new’ pieces, Ressence has provided the watch world with something fresh and truly original in their watches.
This is the Type 1G, an evolution from the original and first Ressence introduced in 2010, the 1001 concept. Let’s begin with the basics. Sized at 42mm with a thickness of 11.5mm, the Ressence Type 1 is housed in a grade 5 titanium case with wire lugs. As a result, it only weighs 84 grams and wears incredibly well on the wrist. While conventional watches displays hands on a central axis with a winding crown to set and wind the watch, Ressence has reinterpreted this in a very interesting way.
Central to the whole idea of Ressence is the ROCS system- the Ressence Orbital Convex System. Instead of a dial with hands on top, Ressence has amalgamated the two into one, with rotating convex discs making up the dial of the watch. The minute and hour hands are applied directly onto the discs and the ROCS mechanism allows for these discs to rotate according to the time. The result is that the dial is constantly revolving with the minute hand comprising of the largest disc followed by the hour hand disc. The other two subdial discs complete the look, working as a running seconds and a day of the week indicator.
The G in the Type 1G stands for guilloche and it is arguably the flagship of all Type 1s. The guilloche finishing on the German silver dial is beautiful and due to its convex form, it can only be produced by one atelier in the world. All of this is covered by an anti-reflective domed sapphire crystal and the overall result is a stunningly attractive watch that is completely unique.
As an evolution of the original 1001 concept, the Type 1 features a crown-less winding system and the winding and time setting is done through the sapphire caseback. It is a very tactile and immersive experience where turning the caseback both winds the mechanism and moves the hour and minute discs.
Overall, the Ressence Type 1G is something that really pushes the possibilities of what a watch can be. Its aesthetics is unmistakably Ressence and it is refreshing to see an independent brand that is truly creative.
This Ressence Type 1G has a power reserve of 36 hours and beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour. It is water resistant up to 1ATM.
