IWC dress watches are some of the most elegant and timeless vintage timepieces around and whenever someone asks me for good value dress watches, I always point towards IWC. Solidly made, great brand and always with a high-grade movement, IWCs, in general, remain hugely undervalued.
This IWC is a perfect example of this- with its ultra-slim profile and rare, high-quality Cal. 421 movement, it is the perfect low-key office watch. The black Roman numerals are slightly raised and match the black hands while contrasting with the opaline dial beneath it.
While IWC dress watches are fairly common, this is something you don’t see every day. Look closer and you will see that this reference was retailed by Cartier, with their name co-branded on the dial, making this example extremely rare and unique. Some may not know, but brands such as Cartier and Tiffany and Co. often retailed other watch brands on top of their own back in the day, with the latter still continuing that practice today. To have a co branded dial in the vintage watch world is seen as something of a rarity and is extremely desirable.
I personally have never seen this reference with the Cartier branding before and this example is 100% original as it has its Cartier serial number engraved behind the top right lug. Furthermore, the movement is stamped HOX, indicating that it was destined for the US market and as a result, Cartier in New York.
This is something that I don’t think I’ll come across again, as to find a Cartier branded IWC is hard enough, let alone this ultra-slim reference. Certainly, a collector's piece, only those who look closely will realize how special it is.
